Oak & Broad supplied this visually dramatic rift and quartered (Rift Sawn and Quarter Sawn) White Oak hardwood floor to complement a home expansion in Atlanta, Georgia. We worked to find the perfect combination of plank size, wood grain, and custom stain to create a truly beautiful and unique White Oak floor.
What is Rift and Quartered?
These terms refer to the way that logs are milled to create planks. Rift and quartered created by cutting perpendicular to the growth rings of the log. The result is a straight and consistent grain pattern. You won’t see knots and other variations that are common in Live Sawn boards. Rift and quartered planks provide an excellent design tool and stable product that is resistant to cupping and splitting. The linear grain pattern allows it to easily expand and contract.
The 5-12′ plank lengths create a clean look that shows off the unique rays and flecks of each wide plank floorboard. While the rift and quartered planks don’t reveal the character of the wood as much as other cuts, they do offer a subtler presentation that is still full of interest. For this home, rift and quartered White Oak flooring was a perfect choice.
White Oak flooring is an excellent material choice for custom stain projects. Oak & Broad can create a fully customized stain that produces the exact effect you are looking to achieve. With this project, we brought out the golden hues of the White Oak to produce a warm and inviting look that compliments the lighter decorative details throughout the home.
